Laundry Worker

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The duties and responsibilities of the Laundry Worker include performing the day-to‑day activities of the Laundry Department in accordance with current Federal, State and late standards, guidelines and regulations, and as may be directed by the Administrator and/or the Laundry Supervisor, to ensure that the facility is maintained in a clean, safe and comfortable manner. The persons holding this position are delegated the responsibility for carrying out the assigned duties and responsibilities,

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE LAUNDRY WORKER:

  • Understand work schedules and assignments,
  • Perform specific tasks in accordance with daily schedules.
  • Collect soiled linens. Personal clothing of residents, towels, etc.
  • Remove linen, towels from dryer.
  • Sort, fold and store linen in an orderly manner in clean linen room.
  • Report linen needs to supervisor.
  • Clean equipment and work area at least once a day.
  • Keep work areas free of hazardous conditions, spills, excess laundry carts, baskets, supplies, equipment, etc.
        • Sort soiled laundry, linen, garments; etc. and separate routine laundry items requiring treatment for stain removal.
        • Discard waste and trash into proper containers and re-line receptacles with plastic liners.
        • Maintain privacy of residents and confidentiality of resident information.

        • Attend and participate in in-service education classes, on the job training programs, etc., as scheduled or as directed.
        • Comply with established infection control and universal precaution practices, and coordinate routine/terminal isolation procedures with nursing services, as well as follow fire safety policies and procedures.
        • Report all incidents, accidents, hazardous conditions or equipment to supervisor immediately.
        • Report defective, burned out or broken resident call lights, light bulbs, exit lights, overhead lights, fluorescent lights, etc. to supervisor immediately.
        • Deliver linens to residents’ units.
        • Notify supervisors of pending absence or tardiness within the time frame described in personnel handbook.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE LAUNDRY WORKER, Cont.:

        • Possess a spirit of cooperation and enthusiasm in order to create an atmosphere conducive to rehabilitation and growth.
        • Ensure that work assignment areas are clean and that equipment, tools, supplies, etc. are properly stored during work periods, as well as before leaving the area for breaks, meals, and end of work day.
        • Turn in and/or report all lost and found items to supervisor.
        • Inspect linens for wear and tear, and set aside for other uses.
        • Assist others in lifting equipment, supplies, etc. as directed or requested.
        • Report scarcity of laundry supplies.
        • Clean laundry equipment, carts, etc.
        • Perform terminal cleaning procedures.
        • Participate in and assist in departmental studies and projects as directed.
        • Assist with completion of appropriate forms and reports.
        • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor

ABILITIES REQUIRED:

        • Recognize and respond to the laundry needs of residents and physical plant,
          and to the laundry needs of residents.
        • Perform laundry tasks such as sorting, folding and delivering resident’s laundry, loading and emptying washers and dryers, etc,
        • Perform the essential functions of the job in a manner that benefits residents of the facility and complies with business necessity without causing undue hardship.

EQUIPMENT, MATERIALS, MACHINES AND/OR TOOLS USED:

        • The following is a list of the principal equipment, materials, machines, tools, etc. used by the Laundry Worker. The list, however, is not necessarily all inclusive.
        • Carts
        • Cleaning supplies and other chemicals
        • Dryers
        • Folding table
        • Linen racks
        • Sewing machines
        • Washers
        • Miscellaneous laundry supplies and equipment.

PHYSICA1 STRENGTH REQUIRED:

        • To perform the essential functions of the job of Laundry Worker routinely requires a minimal to moderate amount of strength and agility to successfully complete work

POUNDS TO LIFT:

        • The minimum number of pounds determined to be appropriate for the Laundry Worker to lift, with or without reasonable accommodation, is thirty-five.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

        • Except where appropriate and conducive to accomplishing the goals and objectives of a particular task. The Laundry Worker will work in a well-lighted area that is ventilated and as physiologically and psychologically innocuous as possible under the conditions which exist at a particular time. Because the essential functions of the job of Laundry Worker may require exposure to hazardous chemicals, safety risks such as strong odors,

dust and lint, and machine vibrations, etc., as well as infectious waste, diseases, odors and other situations associated with health care, including but not limited to exposure to AIDS, HIV and Hepatitis B viruses involving Risk Classification Categories I, 2 and 3,** environmental conditions will fluctuate. To be qualified for the position of an applicant/employee will have the ability to work in an environment conducive to caring for residents, with or without reasonable accommodation and without posing a direct threat to self or others. Universal Precautions Risk Classification Categories: Tasks may involve exposure to blood or body fluids.

WORK SCHEDULE:

        • The Laundry Worker will report to work ready for routine duties and emergencies, and may include on-call duty up to 24 hours, unless other qualified personnel are available and pre-assignment is made.
